The designation Vieilles Vignes is not a separate level of Burgundian classification, but rather indicates the age of the vines. In the case of Domaine Henri Delagrange, the vines are on average 55 years old and represent a long-established part of the family vineyards in Volnay.
The 1.80-hectare vineyard lies on limestone subsoil with ferruginous oolites, small spherical mineral formations created in an ancient sea. Older vines give the wine greater concentration without losing the delicacy typical of Volnay. Vieilles Vignes thus stands between the basic expression of the appellation and the individual Premier Cru wines of the estate: it offers a broader picture of Volnay with a balanced structure and silky tannins.
