La Riotte is a Premier Cru vineyard situated on a gentle slope directly below the Grand Cru Clos Saint-Denis. The clay-limestone soil here contains a large amount of small stones, and the vines for this wine were planted in 1959. The name La Riotte refers to a small path or narrow lane.

Compared to the more firmly structured Premier Crus in Morey-Saint-Denis, La Riotte yields a more open and approachable wine with a finer structure. Lignier recommends enjoying it primarily within the first ten years, when it best displays its generous and immediate character.
