Volnay comes from several plots located on both the lower and upper parts of the slope, including Les Buttes, Les Grands Champs, Les Famines, Les Lurets, and La Gigotte. Each contributes a different aspect of the appellation's character to the wine.

Deeper clay soils in the lower elevations give the wine richness and a rounder structure, while stonier clay-limestone soils higher up the slope bring freshness and a finer texture. Vines of various ages, from younger plantings to bushes approximately 75 years old, create a comprehensive picture of Volnay in an elegant and approachable style.
