Clos de la Roche is one of four Grand Crus in Morey-Saint-Denis, with the entire vineyard spanning just 16.73 hectares. Domaine Hubert Lignier owns 0.90 hectares here, divided into two parts: 0.62 hectares in Monts Luisants and 0.28 hectares in Les Fremières. The vineyard in Les Fremières was planted between 1953 and 1960, and in Monts Luisants between 1955 and 1965. Thanks to the extent of this family holding and its long history, Clos de la Roche is one of the defining wines of the entire domaine.
The soil is very shallow, composed of white limestone, clay, and marl over a compact Jurassic bedrock known as dalle nacrée. In Monts Luisants, the vines also grow on a significant slope with an incline of around 25%. The name Clos de la Roche also refers to the stony character of this location and the rock appearing close to the surface.
The old vines and the fragmented mineral subsoil give the wine concentration, depth, and a firm structure, accompanied by fine, silky tannins. Clos de la Roche is built for very long aging and, in Hubert Lignier's portfolio, represents the most complete expression of the winery's historical connection with Morey-Saint-Denis.
